Pros:

  • Blockchain technology is promising, evolving, and is used in areas ranging from education and computer games to fintech and government services. From this comes the next point.
  • Lack of employment problems. There is no doubt that in the foreseeable future, major companies will hire more specialists with skills in blockchain architecture and software development.
  • High income.
  • The possibility of self-employment. A blockchain engineer with the right knowledge set for the job will have no difficulty coming up with a business based on the technology.
  • It is possible to work remotely, which is an advantage for people with disabilities.

Cons:

  • Blockchain is a complex field of development, it is almost impossible to master on your own, you will need a basic technical education (bachelor’s degree).
  • The need to sit in front of a computer for a long time, which negatively affects the musculoskeletal system, nervous system and eyesight.
  • Sometimes I have to work overtime – there can be a failure in the network at any time, which requires immediate intervention.
  • High cost of mistakes (data loss and hacking is costly for companies).

Important personal qualities
A blockchain engineer and developer needs:

  • Advanced analytical skills;
  • problem-solving skills;
  • organizational skills;
  • an attention to detail;
  • well-developed communication skills;
  • ability to collaborate.

Like all representatives of the IT sphere, a blockchain engineer must take a keen interest in the development of new technologies and continually learn.

Blockchain developer (engineer) is an IT specialist engaged in blockchain development. This term refers to a consistent chain of blocks that contains information and is built according to certain rules. This chain cannot be unnoticeably changed or partially deleted.

The concept of blockchain was first used in the Bitcoin system. Therefore, it is often associated with cryptocurrency transactions. However, the technology is also used in other areas:

  • banking;
  • medical;
  • insurance;
  • transportation;
  • energy and others.

That is, where it is necessary to ensure high security of data storage and reliability.

Depending on their responsibilities and tasks, IT specialists working in the blockchain industry come in two types:

Basic programmers. They are responsible for the architectural component. That is, they create the consensus algorithm, the network and monitor it, making sure it is secure.

Software developers. They develop a decentralized application, using the work of programmers of the previous specialization.
So, what a blockchain developer does:

Is responsible for the software lifecycle;
Creates the architectural component and smart algorithms;
Optimizes protocols and performs other activities aimed at creating and controlling the chain of blocks of stored information.

IT specialists in this field must understand data structures and algorithms as well as cryptography and digital networks. Often they have to work with a specific type of blockchain, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.

A blockchain developer manages the lifecycle of an application created using the technology of the same name. He or she builds the architecture of the system, installs smart contracts (special transaction protocols called Smart Contracts) and optimizes them.

Blockchain developers have two specializations:

Blockchain software developer.
Core blockchain developer.

Both do basically the same thing, blockchain development, but they have different responsibilities.

Blockchain software developer.
He creates applications based on the architecture and protocol of the system, which also run on blockchain. It can be compared to a web developer who builds on what a web architect has already created and develops his own product – new web applications.

Blockchain software developers create DApps (decentralized apps, similar to regular mobile apps). They are responsible for the interface (external) and internal (backend) development of DApps within the stack on which the apps run.

Blockchain engineer
This developer is responsible for creating the architecture of the system. He or she oversees the network, develops the consensus protocol, and makes most of the vital decisions related to blockchain. Engineers are responsible for the security of their blockchain network.

Many experts say that blockchain is what the future holds. It is a unique and revolutionary technology that solves data storage security problems. Every transaction in the chain is transparent, nothing can be tweaked for profit or stolen.

Another advantage is decentralization. This means that every transaction is done without intermediaries. Thanks to this, various sectors of business can significantly reduce costs.

Because the technology is in demand and will only grow in the future, it needs people working with it – which is what blockchain developers are doing. There are already more than 150,000 job openings in this field on LinkedIn (a social network for finding and establishing business contracts). The demand for employees is high, but the specialists themselves are still few. And the demand for programmers in this field will only grow.
